Putting your website on the Internet
From your service provider you will need to find out your Host, Password and User ID. They will have these details on their web site, or you may have to request them to send the details by email.
Once you have these details you will be able to upload your site either in Dreamweaver, or with a separate FTP programme (go to www.download.com and put ftp in the search box – there are lots of free ftp programmes to choose from).
In Dreamweaver choose site/edit sites from the site list box in the sites window toolbar. In the Edit Sites dialog box click Edit. Click the advanced tab; then select Remote info from the category list to display the settings for the remote site.
Select the appropriate access mode in the Access box – this will normally be FTP.
Fill in the following boxes:
FTP Host – The address for the host FTP site. This address is usually in the form of ftp.hostname.com.
Host Directory – the directory on the host system where web documents are stored – the root directory of the web site. You may not need to enter anything here if the FTP host address points directly to the web root directory. Otherwise you need to enter a directory path from the FTP host root to the web root – for example, ~username/webroot/.
Login – this is your user name for access to the FTP/web server. It’s usually the same as your account user ID for this service provider.
Password - Input the password for FTP access – usually the same as your master account password for this service provider.
Save – check this option to have Dreamweaver remember your password so you don’t have to enter it manually each time you connect.
Use Passive FTP and Use Firewall – if your internet access goes through a firewall that requires special passive-mode FTP operation, check one or both options. If you are not sure, leave these options unchecked for the time being. If you later have a problem establishing an FTP connection, consult with your network system administrator for the proper settings.
Use SSH Encrypted Secure Login – Check this option if the FTP server requires an encrypted login.
Automatically upload files to server on save - Check this option to have Dreamweaver automatically copy your file to the FTP server when you save your document.
Check in/Check Out – Check this option to enable the file checkout feature – This feature is for workgroups collaborating on web site development. If you work alone, ignore it.
Click OK. You are now ready to transfer files to the Remote site:
Putting your website on the Internet
Make sure you are connected to the internet. Make sure your site files are in
the site window.
Chose Site/Connect (or click on the connect button) Dreamweaver establishes
a link to the remote site. Select the root folder to upload the entire site.
Chose Site/Put (or click the put button), you will be prompted for confirmation
before proceeding. Dreamweaver automatically creates folders on the remote site
as needed to duplicate the folder structure of your local site and copies files
to the correct folders. The site window status bar shows the filename of each
file as it is transferred to the remote site.
When the transfer is complete click the connect button again, or choose Site/Disconnect to break the connection to the remote site.
Keeping your site up to date:
Once you have first published your site you will need to keep it up to date, freshen content and add new pages and features.
The procedure is similar to the one outlined previously. The only differences are in the files you select to transfer and the choice of the get or put command.
To upload selected files from the local site to the remote site, select the files you want to transfer in the local files list and choose site/put.
To download selected files from the remote site to the local site, select the files you want to transfer in the Remote Site list and choose Site/Get.
To delete files or folders from the remote site, or the local site, select the files or folders you want to delete and chose right click and select Delete from the context menu that appears.
When you transfer files to or from a remote site, Dreamweaver creates a transfer
log that you can refer to if a problem occurs. You can even show your client
this record after you have uploaded or changed files on the site. The view the
log, select Window/Site/FTP Log from the Site window. Dreamweaver displays the
FTP Log tab in the Results panel.
